Soweto is a former township from the times of Apartheid. Starting about 15 km away from the centre of Johannesburg, it comprises some 63 sq. km, where an estimated three million people live. The tour’s highlights are informal settlements, visit the home of Nelson Mandela & Bishop Desmond Tutu, sites of June 16, 1976 uprising, Matchbox houses, Elephant houses & Hostels, Hector Peterson Museum, Pillars of the constitution, the turn of violence, Mandela’s release, the homelands, the significance of 1976, 1994 election, the reconciliation commission, the new constitution. The apartheid museum opened in 2001 and is acknowledged as the pre-eminent museum in the world dealing with 20th century South Africa, at the heart of which is the apartheid story.
