Inhaca Island is situated across the bay of Maputo, just 40 km from the capital city of Mozambique. It is easily accessed with daily air transfers, just 10 minutes flying time from Maputo. There are also some boat companies that arrange boat transfers for larger groups.
Inhaca Island has a lot to offer, from boat trips to the nearby Portuguese Island, which is a totally deserted island with magnificent white sandy beaches, to excursions to the Marine Biology Museum or the Inhaca Lighthouse. There is also a small village to provide some local colour or souvenir hunting. Inhaca Island is a true African Island, and an ideal weekend getaway with great appeal
Inhaca Lodge
Inhaca Lodge’s forty bungalows with en-suite bathrooms are extremely comfortable and are situated amongst coconut palms in a tropical setting. The interior décor carries an African-island theme, and is light, bright and airy, with twin beds, and family rooms have an additional bunk bed, which can accommodate two small children. All chalets have en-suite bathrooms with showers (hot water). Chalets have televisions and overhead fans and are serviced regularly.
The hotel boasts a large salt-water swimming pool, and a water-sports centre with a wide range of water-sports on offer, including diving, snorkelling, fishing, kayaking, water-skiing and Para-sailing. Tours by tractor to the lighthouse or Maritime Museum, boat trips to Portuguese Island, and walking trails around the island can also be arranged.
The Hotel restaurant caters to the enthusiastic appetite of guests with fresh seafood served daily. Seafood barbeques, under the trees with a local band supplying the music, make for a special evening, while you watch the sun set over the ocean, and the full buffet breakfast is superb, with freshly baked scones and pastries to tempt the palate.
A lunch menu is available at the hotel, or picnic lunches can be arranged for outings. There is also a quaint little restaurant in the village; the famous Lucas’ Restaurant, where wonderful seafood lunches can be had at reasonable prices.
AMENITIES:
The hotel has a large salt-water swimming pool, a tennis court, and volleyball and indoors there is a TV & video room, a games room with darts, pool table and table tennis, as well as a “play room” for younger children.
Conference facilities: Inhaca Lodge has a fully air-conditioned conference room, which seats up to 80 delegates, depending on seating configuration. The Conference room has an overhead projector, screen, flipchart, TV and video machine. Other facilities can also be arranged, if required.
GONE FISHIN’ are the organisers of the water sports at Inhaca Island Lodge. There is excellent Scuba Diving, and snorkelling, as well as Deep-sea Fishing, and Rock & Surf fishing. Water sports on offer also include wake snake, wake tube, water-skiing, paddle canoes, and Para-sailing.
Boat Charters for Fishing
Boats available for charter include Yamaha 21 ft Inshore, Yamaha 20 ft Lt tackle boats, and 18 ft Ski Boats – all fully equipped.
EXCURSIONS:
Excursions can be arranged to Portuguese Island, the Biology Station, Light House Beach, the Mangrove swamps, as well as the Santa Maria Wall. Also available are Sunset cruises, Whale Watching excursions, etc.
Portuguese Island is a deserted island approx. 3 km from Inhaca Island. The boat crossing only takes about 10 -15 minutes and picnic lunches can be arranged from Inhaca Lodge. Portuguese Island has beautiful beaches and the lagoon area is great for all manner of water sports. The snorkelling is also fairly good.
Santa Maria Wall (also known as Ponte Torres) is quite far from Inhaca Lodge, on the other side of the island. The boat trip takes approximately 45 minutes each way. This is actually a reef, which is really great for “drift” dives or snorkelling. The “wall” is a rocky ledge that falls steeply down to 20 metres. Best dive leading up to high tide; the jagged rocks have many caves and ledges that harbour all kinds of marine life.
Getting There:
Both LAM (the Mozambique Airline), and SAA fly into Maputo on a daily basis, but the transfer to Inhaca is only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. We have special IT Fares (inclusive tour fares) with the airlines, which make packages to Inhaca very reasonable.
Health & Clothing
Health
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers over 1 year of age arriving within 6 days from infected areas.
Vaccination against typhoid is advised.
Malaria risk, predominantly in the malignant falciparum form, exists throughout the year in the low altitude areas (eastern part) of the Limpopo Province, eastern part of Mpumalanga (including the Kruger National Park) and north-eastern KwaZulu/Natal as far south as the Tugela River. The risk is highest from October to May.
Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) is endemic in the north and east. Avoid swimming and paddling in fresh water – swimming pools which are chlorinated and maintained are safe.
Clothing
South Africa’s climate is generally sunny and pleasant. Winters are usually mild, although snow falls on the mountain ranges of the Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State and Natal and occasionally in lower-lying areas, when a brief cold spell can be expected throughout the country.
